How can your mattress help with back pain?

Are you waking up constantly with a stiff or sore back?

Felt like you have not slept at all?

If your answer is yes, check the following list to see if your mattress may be a factor or even the cause.

1. You struggle to find a comfortable position in bed.

If you are tossing and turning to try and find a comfortable position, it’s a possible sign that your mattress might not be the right fit for you.

2. You wake up often during the night

When immobile for long periods of time, like during sleep, inflammatory chemicals accumulate in your joints, exacerbating pain and stiffness. This explains why people with inflammatory back pain can wake up in agony in the middle of the night and feel stiff and achy first thing in the morning.

3. You feel like you’re rolling off your bed

Lack of edge support may mean that your mattress structure is deteriorating and contributing to your morning pain.

4. Your Mattress is saggy (a divet usually appears along your mattress)

Sagging mattresses can cause spine pain or stiffness as it throws your spine out of proper alignment. A saggy mattress has a dip where you need support the most – usually right under the lower back.

5. You feel like you are sleeping on a board

There is a difference between an ergonomic mattress and a mattress that is too hard/firm. A firm mattress forces your spine into an unnatural position and creates pressure points. Your mattress should be able to keep your spine neutral.

6. You don’t feel well-rested when waking up

If you feel like you aren’t well-rested and refreshed, but are groaning about your back pain after a night of supposed rest, then it is time to consider whether your mattress might be the culprit.

7. Your mattress is past its prime

A recommended range of most mattress lifespan is between 7-10 years. Although it may depend on the type of mattress you have, it could be a contributing factor to morning pain if the mattress is too old.

8. You feel lumps in your mattress

Sleeping on a lumpy mattress can make your back hurt, caused by uneven back support during sleep. Even though rotating the mattress or adding a good mattress topper may fix things in the short term, lumps are red flags that it’s time for a mattress upgrade. You mattress should be flat, and smooth to pressure.

9. How insufficient sleep affects the spine

Failure to get enough sleep can mean that your muscles don’t have sufficient time to recover from the day’s activities and can’t recuperate well. This can lead to muscle stiffness and back pain

Lack of sleep can mean that your body does not have time to produce essential anti-inflammatory compounds and reduce swelling. This can worsen back pain, particularly if it is associated with tissue inflammation

10. You wake up with back pain

Morning pain is one of the first signs that you and your mattress don’t like to be together. If you feel fine when you go to bed but wake up groaning and clutching your lower back, your mattress could be a contributing factor.
